Key takeaways
CLAT is the entrance test for 5-year law degrees after Class 12 and for the LLM after an LLB.
It is run by the Consortium of NLUs, once a year, in offline pen-and-paper mode, in English.
It tests reading and reasoning, not prior knowledge of law.
Any stream can apply; there is no upper age limit and no cap on attempts.
CLAT 2027 is on Sunday, 6 December 2026, and registration closes on 31 October 2026.
What is CLAT test? The simple definition
If you have wondered what the CLAT exam means, here is the plain version. CLAT is a single, common entrance test that most National Law Universities (NLUs) in India use to choose students. Instead of writing a separate exam for every law school, you write CLAT once. Your rank then decides which NLU and which course you can get. "Test" and "exam" mean the same thing here, so "what is CLAT test" and "what is CLAT exam" are the same question. However you phrase it (what's CLAT, what CLAT exam is, or what is mean by CLAT exam), the answer below is the same. Everything a beginner needs to know about CLAT exam basics is on this page.
So, what is a CLAT exam, in one line? It is the gateway to the country's top public law schools. Ask what is CLAT exam in India's admission calendar and you will find it sits in December, a few months before Class 12 boards, so most students prepare for both together. That is why it is the most widely written law entrance test in the country. If you only need the expansion of the letters, our page on the CLAT full form covers it, including the Hindi meaning. Hindi readers can read CLAT exam kis liye hota hai instead.

What is CLAT exam for? The purpose of CLAT
This is the question students type most, whether it is "CLAT exam for what", "CLAT exam is for what", "CLAT exam for what purpose" or "CLAT exam is for what purpose". The answer is admission to law. Ask any counsellor for what CLAT exam is conducted and you will hear the same thing. The CLAT exam purpose is simple: the exam exists to rank applicants on one common, merit-based scale so the NLUs can fill their seats fairly through a single counselling process.
Before CLAT, each NLU ran its own test, and students travelled across the country to write five or six papers. The CLAT examination is for ending that. It saves students money and time and gives every NLU the same yardstick. What is CLAT exam used for in practice? Three things:
Admission to 5-year integrated LLB programmes at NLUs and 60+ private and state colleges that accept CLAT scores.
Admission to the one-year LLM through CLAT PG.
Recruitment. Several public sector undertakings have used CLAT PG scores to hire legal officers, so the CLAT exam uses extend beyond college admission.
Why CLAT exam is given by so many students, then? Because it is the shortest route into a top law school. The CLAT exam for law has become the default first choice for anyone serious about a legal career after Class 12. So if your question is simply "CLAT is for what" or "what is CLAT exam for", the honest answer is a seat at an NLU.
CLAT exam is for which course?
This is where most confusion sits, and searches like "CLAT exam for which course" usually come from parents comparing options. Here is exactly which course CLAT is for, by level:
You want | Is CLAT the test? | Which CLAT |
BA LLB, BBA LLB, BSc LLB, BCom LLB, BSW LLB (5 years, after Class 12) | Yes | CLAT UG |
LLM (1 year, after LLB) | Yes | CLAT PG |
3-year LLB (after graduation) | No | Universities run their own admission routes |
NLU Delhi (any course) | No | AILET, NLU Delhi's own test |
So the CLAT exam for LLB means the 5-year integrated LLB, not the 3-year one. Students often search "CLAT exam for 3 year LLB" hoping for a shortcut. That route does not exist.
Who conducts the CLAT exam, and how did it start?
The CLAT exam is conducted by the Consortium of National Law Universities, a permanent body of the participating NLUs. It sets the paper, publishes the notification, runs registration on consortiumofnlus.ac.in, and manages counselling and seat allotment.
To understand what is Common Law Admission Test today, start with how it began. On 23 November 2007, the vice-chancellors of seven NLUs signed an agreement to hold one common test, and the first CLAT followed in 2008. Who conducted CLAT exam in that first year? NLSIU Bengaluru hosted it. For the next decade the job rotated among NLUs, until the permanent Consortium took over from 2018. Since then the pool has grown to 26 of India's 27 NLUs. NLU Delhi is the one major exception; it admits only through AILET. Delhi University's Faculty of Law has also admitted 5-year LLB students on CLAT scores since 2023.
What does the CLAT test?
CLAT UG is a comprehension test, not a memory test. Every question sits under a reading passage, and the paper rewards how well you read, reason and decide under time pressure.
Section | Questions | Approx. weight |
English Language | 22–26 | 20% |
Current Affairs including GK | 28–32 | 25% |
Legal Reasoning | 28–32 | 25% |
Logical Reasoning | 22–26 | 20% |
Quantitative Techniques | 10–14 | 10% |
Each correct answer earns one mark and each wrong answer costs 0.25. There is no sectional time limit. The total was cut from 150 to 120 questions from CLAT 2024 onward, so ignore any page still quoting 150. For the full breakdown, see the CLAT exam pattern and the topic-wise CLAT syllabus 2027.
Who can take CLAT?
CLAT UG is open to anyone who has passed Class 12, or is appearing for it, with at least 45% marks (40% for SC and ST candidates). CLAT exam is for which stream? Every stream: science, commerce and arts students all write it, and arts is not an advantage. There is no upper age limit and no limit on attempts. You do not need your Class 12 result to register; you only show it at the time of admission. Indian nationals and NRIs can apply. Before paying the fee, check the full CLAT eligibility rules, including the documents you will need at admission.
What is CLAT PG?
CLAT PG is the postgraduate version of the test, for admission to the one-year LLM, and it is often lumped together with "CLAT LLM". It shares the date, the slot and the 120-question, two-hour format with CLAT UG, but the content is different.
CLAT UG | CLAT PG | |
For | 5-year integrated LLB | 1-year LLM |
Who | Class 12 pass or appearing | LLB graduates or final-year students |
Minimum marks | 45% (40% SC/ST) | 50% (45% SC/ST) in LLB |
Tests | Reading, reasoning, awareness | Law subjects such as constitutional law and jurisprudence |
Exam day | Same day and slot: 6 December 2026, 2–4 PM |
CLAT exam benefits: why it is worth writing
The biggest benefit is reach. One CLAT exam score puts you in the running for most NLUs, which together offer more than 3,400 undergraduate seats. A second benefit is fairness. The paper is the same for everyone and tests skills, not coaching-friendly facts, so a student from a small town who reads well can outrank a student from a big city. A third benefit is what comes after. NLU graduates move into corporate law firms, litigation, the judiciary, policy and in-house legal roles. CLAT PG also opens LLM seats and, in some cases, public sector legal jobs.
What CLAT is not: five common myths
"CLAT tests law knowledge." It doesn't. Legal reasoning passages give you the principle, and you apply it to the facts.
"CLAT gets you a 3-year LLB." It doesn't. CLAT UG is only for 5-year integrated programmes.
"You can write CLAT in Hindi." You can't. The paper is in English only.
"CLAT covers every NLU." It doesn't. NLU Delhi uses AILET, which is held a week after CLAT this year.
"CLAT happens twice a year." It doesn't. It is held once a year, in December.

How a CLAT score becomes an NLU seat
CLAT itself only gives you a score and an all-India rank. The seat comes through counselling, which the Consortium runs centrally after the result. You register for counselling, pay a counselling fee, and list your NLU preferences in order. The Consortium then publishes allotment lists in rounds; last cycle there were five, running from January to May. If you are allotted a seat, you pay a confirmation fee to hold it, and you can stay in later rounds to move up to a preferred NLU. This is why your preference order matters as much as your rank. A student who lists colleges carelessly can lose a better seat they had already earned.
From the classroom: The students who do best in CLAT are rarely the ones who know the most facts. They are the ones who can read a 450-word passage quickly, find the argument, and stop themselves from guessing. That is a skill you can train, and it is why we start every new batch with reading, not rules. — Anand Sharma
