Will the CLAT 2027 Exam Pattern Change?

Possibly. The Consortium of NLUs has set up an Expert Committee to review the CLAT UG and PG exams and recommend reforms, and it invited public suggestions. As of now the pattern — 120 questions, 2 hours, five sections — remains unchanged, and any revision will be confirmed only in the official CLAT 2027 notification.

The committee is chaired by former Supreme Court Justice Indu Malhotra and includes legal academics from universities such as Oxford, LSE, Columbia and Cambridge. Its brief is to examine the exam's format, difficulty and question design — so watch the notification closely for any change to the number of questions, section weightage or duration.

Our advice: prepare for the current pattern (it is what every past paper and mock is built on), but follow the official notification when it drops in July 2026. We update this page the moment the Consortium announces anything, so bookmark it.

FAQ

CLAT 2027 Date FAQs

What is the CLAT 2027 exam date?+

CLAT 2027 is expected to be held on 6 December 2026 (Sunday), in a single offline session from 2:00 to 4:00 PM, conducted by the Consortium of NLUs. This date is tentative — based on the Consortium's consistent first-or-second-week-of-December pattern — and will be confirmed in the official CLAT 2027 notification, expected July 2026.

When will the CLAT 2027 notification be released?+

The official CLAT 2027 notification is expected to be released in July 2026 by the Consortium of NLUs, on its website consortiumofnlus.ac.in. The notification (a downloadable PDF) confirms the exact exam date, eligibility, exam pattern, application process and fee. Until it is published, all dates should be treated as expected, based on previous CLAT cycles.

When does CLAT 2027 registration open?+

CLAT 2027 registration opens in August 2026 — the Consortium of NLUs has confirmed this, with most sources citing 1 August 2026. The application window is expected to stay open until late October 2026 (around 31 October). Registration is done online at consortiumofnlus.ac.in. We recommend registering early rather than waiting for the last week.

What is the last date to apply for CLAT 2027?+

The last date to apply for CLAT 2027 is expected to be around 31 October 2026, based on previous cycles, with an application correction window typically following in November 2026. The exact deadline will be confirmed in the official notification. Apply well before the deadline — last-minute server load and document issues cause avoidable problems.

Is CLAT 2027 conducted online or offline?+

CLAT 2027 is an offline, centre-based, pen-and-paper exam. Candidates answer 120 multiple-choice questions on an OMR sheet within 2 hours at an allotted test centre. It is not a computer-based test. Centres are spread across 130+ cities in India, including Delhi, Noida and Gurugram, and you select preferred test cities during the application.

What time is the CLAT 2027 exam?+

CLAT 2027 is expected to be held from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM on 6 December 2026, a Sunday — the Consortium's usual afternoon slot. The exam runs for 2 hours (120 minutes). Your admit card will state the exact reporting time, which is well before the start; candidates are typically required to report around an hour ahead. Confirm the final timing on your admit card.

What day of the week is CLAT 2027?+

CLAT 2027 is expected to be held on Sunday, 6 December 2026. The Consortium of NLUs consistently conducts CLAT on a Sunday in the first or second week of December, in a single afternoon shift, so that working days and school schedules are not disrupted. The final day and date are confirmed in the official notification.

When will the CLAT 2027 admit card be released?+

The CLAT 2027 admit card is expected to be released in the third week of November 2026, roughly one to two weeks before the exam. You download it by logging into your CLAT account on consortiumofnlus.ac.in. The admit card carries your allotted exam centre, reporting time and exam-day instructions — carry a printout plus a valid photo ID to the centre.

When will the CLAT 2027 result be declared?+

The CLAT 2027 result is expected to be declared in the third week of December 2026, shortly after the exam on 6 December 2026. The Consortium typically releases a provisional answer key on 8–9 December, opens an objection window, then publishes the final answer key and the result with a merit list. Counselling for NLU seat allotment follows in late December.

When is the CLAT 2027 answer key released?+

The Consortium usually releases the provisional CLAT answer key on the same day or the day after the exam — so around 8–9 December 2026. Candidates can raise objections to the provisional key within a specified window, against a fee per question. The final answer key is released in mid-December 2026, shortly before the result and merit list.

What is the CLAT 2027 application fee?+

The CLAT 2027 application fee is expected to be around ₹4,000 for General/OBC/PWD/NRI candidates and ₹3,500 for SC/ST/BPL candidates (indicative, based on the previous cycle). The exact fee is confirmed in the notification. The fee is paid online during the application; previous-year question papers, if purchased, may carry a small additional charge.

How do I apply for CLAT 2027?+

Apply online at consortiumofnlus.ac.in once registration opens in August 2026. Register with your mobile number and email, verify the OTP, then log in and complete the form — personal and academic details, photo and signature upload, NLU preferences and test-city choices — and pay the fee. Submit before the deadline (expected around 31 October 2026) and download the confirmation.

Who conducts CLAT 2027?+

CLAT 2027 is conducted by the Consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs), headquartered in Bengaluru. Since 2019 the Consortium has organised CLAT centrally for admission to its member NLUs. Its official website, consortiumofnlus.ac.in, is the only authoritative source for the notification, application, admit card, answer key and result — always verify dates there rather than on third-party sites.

How many NLUs accept CLAT 2027 scores?+

CLAT 2027 scores are accepted by around 24–26 National Law Universities for their UG (and PG) law programmes, plus a number of private and government institutions that use CLAT scores. NLU Delhi is the notable exception — it does not accept CLAT and conducts its own exam, AILET. So most aspirants prepare for both CLAT and AILET to keep every NLU open.

Will the CLAT 2027 exam pattern change?+

Possibly. The Consortium has formed an Expert Committee, chaired by former Supreme Court Justice Indu Malhotra, to review the CLAT UG and PG exams and recommend reforms. As of now the pattern — 120 questions, 2 hours, five sections — is unchanged, and any revision will be confirmed only in the official CLAT 2027 notification. Prepare for the current pattern while watching the notification.

How many questions are there in CLAT 2027?+

CLAT 2027 (UG) is expected to have 120 multiple-choice questions to be answered in 2 hours, across five sections — English Language, Current Affairs including General Knowledge, Legal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning and Quantitative Techniques. Each question carries one mark, with 0.25 deducted for a wrong answer. Any change to this structure would be announced in the official notification.

How many days are left for CLAT 2027?+

With CLAT 2027 expected on 6 December 2026, the number of days remaining depends on today's date — our live countdown on this page shows the current figure. As a rough guide, an aspirant starting around 12–16 months ahead has ample time to complete the syllabus, build reading speed and take a full mock series before the exam.

Is there negative marking in CLAT 2027?+

Yes. CLAT 2027 is expected to carry negative marking of 0.25 marks for each incorrect answer, with one mark awarded per correct answer and no penalty for unattempted questions. This makes intelligent question selection important — reckless guessing lowers your score. The exact marking scheme is confirmed in the official notification, but it has been consistent across recent cycles.

How many times is CLAT conducted in a year?+

CLAT is conducted once a year. The Consortium of NLUs has confirmed that CLAT 2027 will be held only once, in December 2026. There is no upper limit on the number of years a candidate may attempt CLAT, but since it runs annually, each attempt is a full year apart — which is why droppers reattempt the following December.

When does CLAT 2027 counselling begin?+

CLAT 2027 counselling for NLU seat allotment is expected to begin in late December 2026, soon after the result. The Consortium conducts centralised online counselling in multiple rounds, allotting seats by All-India rank, category and the NLU preferences you listed in your application. You confirm or upgrade your allotted seat in each round by paying the required fees within the window.

Where can I check official CLAT 2027 dates and updates?+

The only authoritative source for CLAT 2027 dates is the Consortium of NLUs website, consortiumofnlus.ac.in, where the official notification PDF, application portal, admit card, answer key and result are published. Third-party sites (including this one) provide expected timelines for planning, but always verify the final dates on the official site. We update this page whenever the Consortium announces anything.
