What Is the CLAT Exam, and What Is It For?

The CLAT exam is India’s national entrance test for law. CLAT stands for Common Law Admission Test, and it is conducted by the Consortium of National Law Universities to select students for the five-year integrated LLB (undergraduate) and the one-year LLM (postgraduate) programmes at the participating National Law Universities. Put simply, the CLAT exam is for anyone who wants to study law at a National Law University, either straight after Class 12 or at postgraduate level after an LLB.

What is the CLAT exam?

The Common Law Admission Test, or CLAT, is a national-level entrance examination for admission to law programmes in India. It is the single test that most of the country’s National Law Universities (NLUs) use to fill their seats, which is why it is often called the gateway to legal education in India. A student sits one exam, receives an All India Rank, and uses that rank to seek admission across many universities at once, instead of writing a separate test for each.

CLAT is held once a year in offline, pen and paper mode. It is set for two levels: an undergraduate paper for the five-year integrated law degree taken after Class 12, and a postgraduate paper for the LLM taken after an LLB. When people ask clat kya hota hai or what CLAT means, this is the short answer: it is the common national law entrance exam that decides who gets into the NLUs.

What is the CLAT exam for?

The purpose of the CLAT exam is to give every law aspirant one fair, standardized route into the top law schools. Before CLAT existed, each National Law University ran its own entrance test, which forced students to prepare for and travel to many separate exams. CLAT replaced that with a single admission test, so a rank earned in one sitting is accepted across the participating universities.

In practical terms, a CLAT score is used for four things:

  • Admission to the five-year integrated LLB programmes (BA LLB, BBA LLB, B.Com LLB and similar) at the NLUs.

  • Admission to the one-year LLM programme at the NLUs.

  • Admission at many private law universities and other colleges that accept the CLAT score in place of their own test.

  • Shortlisting by some recruiters and public-sector organisations that hire from the NLU talent pool.

A strong CLAT rank does more than secure a college seat. It opens the door to corporate law firms, litigation, the judiciary, legal policy, academia and legal journalism, because the NLUs are among the most heavily recruited law campuses in the country. That is the real answer to what is the CLAT exam for: it is the first step of a legal career, not just a college admission form.

Who conducts CLAT, and which universities accept it?

CLAT is conducted by the Consortium of National Law Universities, a body made up of the participating NLUs themselves. The Consortium releases the notification, runs the registration, sets the question paper, publishes the answer key and result, and coordinates the counselling and seat allotment.

The score is accepted by more than two dozen National Law Universities, and the exact list changes as new NLUs are added, so it is worth checking the current year’s list before you apply. Many private and government law colleges outside the NLU system also admit students on the basis of the CLAT score. You can see the up-to-date roster and previous cut-offs on our CLAT NLU list and cut-offs page.

CLAT UG or CLAT PG: which one is for you?

CLAT is really two exams under one name, and knowing which one applies to you is the first decision to make.

CLAT UG

This is for students in or just out of Class 12 who want to study law as a first degree. It leads to the five-year integrated LLB, and it is by far the larger of the two papers by number of candidates. If you are a school student wondering whether CLAT is for you, this is the paper you will sit.

CLAT PG

This is for law graduates who already hold an LLB and want to pursue an LLM. The paper tests core law subjects at a higher level, so the preparation is different from the undergraduate route.

The rest of this guide focuses mainly on CLAT UG, since that is what most people mean when they ask about the CLAT exam.

CLAT exam pattern at a glance

The undergraduate paper has 120 multiple-choice questions to be answered in two hours. Every correct answer earns one mark, and 0.25 marks are deducted for every wrong answer. The whole paper is comprehension-based: you read a passage, then answer a set of questions on it, so reading speed and clear thinking matter more than memorised facts.

Who is eligible for CLAT?

The eligibility rules are refreshingly simple, and one point surprises many people: there is no upper age limit for CLAT.

  • CLAT UG: you must have passed, or be appearing in, the Class 12 examination with at least 45% marks for the general, OBC and PWD categories, or 40% for the SC and ST categories. Students awaiting their Class 12 result may also apply.

  • CLAT PG: you must hold an LLB or an equivalent degree with at least 50% marks for the general category, or 45% for the reserved categories.

  • Age: there is no minimum or maximum age limit to sit CLAT, and there is no cap on the number of attempts.

The exact percentages and documents for the current cycle are listed on our CLAT 2027 Eligibility.

CLAT vs AILET: why they are not the same exam

Aspirants often confuse CLAT with AILET, but they are two different tests run by two different bodies. CLAT is the common exam for the participating NLUs. AILET is the separate entrance for National Law University Delhi, which does not admit through CLAT and sets its own paper and cut-off. Many students prepare for both to widen their options.

Is the CLAT exam hard, and how long does it take to prepare?

CLAT is competitive because a large number of aspirants compete for a few thousand NLU seats, so the exam is designed to separate candidates finely. It is not, however, a memory test. Since every section is passage-based, the students who do well are the ones who read quickly and accurately, reason clearly under time pressure, and stay calm across two hours.

Most serious aspirants prepare for somewhere between six months and two years, depending on when they start and how much ground they need to cover in reading, legal reasoning and current affairs. A structured plan, a steady reading habit, and regular full-length mock tests with proper analysis usually matter more than the sheer number of study hours. That is exactly how our named CLAT 2026 selections, from Samiksha at All India Rank 45 to Naina Yadav at AIR 299, built their scores.
