CLAT Eligibility After 12th

CLAT Eligibility After 12th: 2027 Rules, Age Limit and Minimum Marks Explained

You can take CLAT UG right after Class 12, or even while you are still in Class 12. According to the Consortium of National Law Universities, you need to have passed 10+2 or an equivalent exam with at least 45% marks, or 40% if you belong to the SC, ST or PwD category. There is no upper age limit for CLAT 2027. Students writing their board exams in March or April 2027 can apply now, provided they show proof of passing at the time of admission.

CLAT Eligibility After 12th

That is the whole rule in three sentences. The rest of this guide covers what those sentences leave out: how your percentage is read, what happens if your board result slips, where age still matters, who cannot apply, and exactly what a current Class 12 student should do between now and admission. For the complete UG and PG criteria in one place, see our CLAT 2027 eligibility guide.

Every row in this table comes from the Consortium's official CLAT 2027 pages. Where coaching sites disagree with it, the official page wins, and a section further down lists the errors you are most likely to run into.

What Is the CLAT Examination For?

The CLAT examination is for admission to law programmes at India's National Law Universities. CLAT stands for Common Law Admission Test. It is the national entrance exam for undergraduate and postgraduate law programmes at 26 National Law Universities. The Consortium of National Law Universities, a body made up of the participating NLUs, conducts it once a year.

The undergraduate paper, CLAT UG, is the one that matters after Class 12. It decides admission to the five-year integrated LL.B. programmes, such as BA LLB and BBA LLB, starting in the 2027-28 academic year. The postgraduate paper, CLAT PG, is for LL.M. admission and has entirely different eligibility, so do not mix up the two when you read criteria online.

Several private universities and public sector organisations also use CLAT scores. So even if you do not end up at an NLU, one exam can open several doors. Put the CLAT full form and eligibility together and you get the whole picture in one line: the Common Law Admission Test is open to anyone who has passed, or is writing, 10+2 with 45% marks (40% for SC, ST and PwD).

CLAT Qualification: What You Need to Have Passed

The qualification rule is short. You must have passed 10+2 or an equivalent examination. CLAT asks for no graduation, no entrance coaching certificate, and no minimum score in any single subject. The only academic filter is your aggregate percentage.

Minimum Marks by Category

Category

General

45%

OBC

45%

NRI, PIO, OCI

45%

SC

40%

ST

40%

PwD

40%

This is the part most students worry about. The bar is modest, but treat it as a hard line. If you fall even slightly short, the Consortium will not consider your admission, whatever your CLAT rank.

If you are claiming a reserved category, the benefit depends on paperwork. You must produce category certificates in the format prescribed by the Government of India or your State Government, and as required by the NLU you are allotted. If your category claim fails verification, you are not thrown out. You are moved out of the reserved list and considered in later counselling rounds as a general candidate, but at that point the 45% floor applies to you.

How Your Percentage Is Read

The official wording is "45% of marks or its equivalent in grade." Two practical points follow from it.

First, if your board awards marks, use the aggregate percentage your marksheet reports. Do not calculate a best-of-five figure yourself to push past the line. If your board has a published rule for computing the aggregate, that rule decides.

Second, if your board awards grades or CGPA, you need the percentage equivalent. Use your board's official conversion formula, not a formula from a coaching website. Keep a copy of the board's conversion notice with your documents in case the NLU asks how you reached your figure.

Your Stream Does Not Matter

The official CLAT criteria set no stream or subject requirement. Science, Commerce, Arts and vocational students all qualify on equal terms. The exam itself tests reading, reasoning and general awareness, not school subjects, so no stream gives you a built-in advantage.

NIOS and Other Equivalent Boards

"Equivalent examination" covers boards other than CBSE, CISCE and state boards. The most common question is about NIOS. The National Institute of Open Schooling states that its Senior Secondary certificate carries the same recognition as certificates from other boards, under a Government of India resolution dated 14 September 1990. So a NIOS Class 12 pass meets the qualification rule, and the same 45% or 40% minimum applies.

If you studied under an international curriculum, such as IB or Cambridge, confirm with the NLUs you are targeting that your qualification is accepted as equivalent to 10+2 before you apply. It is better sorted out now than at the admission desk.

Can Class 12 Students Apply for CLAT?

Yes. This is the heart of CLAT eligibility after 12th, and the official rule is clear. Candidates appearing for their qualifying exam in March or April 2027 are eligible to apply for CLAT 2027.

The catch sits at the end of the process, not the start. You must produce evidence that you passed the qualifying exam when you take admission. If you cannot, you lose your right to be considered, even if you have already been allotted a seat.

Your Class 12 board exams

At admission

You submit your Class 12 result showing at least 45% (or 40%)

This order surprises many students. You write CLAT before your boards, and you may even receive a seat allotment before your board exams begin. The seat stays provisional until your board result confirms you cleared the minimum.

That makes your board exams a genuine part of your CLAT plan. Many aspirants stop taking school seriously once CLAT prep starts. Since the eligibility floor is only 45%, you do not need to top your boards, but you cannot neglect them either.

What If You Fall Short or Fail a Subject?

The rule says "passed" 10+2 with the minimum marks. Two consequences follow:

  1. If your aggregate lands below 45% (or 40% for reserved categories), you are not eligible for admission that year, whatever your CLAT score.

  2. If you fail a subject and your board does not declare you passed, you do not meet the qualification until you clear it.

If you are headed for a compartment or supplementary exam, the practical question is timing. You need a passing result in hand when your allotted NLU asks for it. Board and NLU timelines vary, so contact the NLU's admission office as soon as your seat is allotted.

The good news is that nothing is lost for good. CLAT has no attempt limit and no upper age limit, so a student who misses the mark one year can sit again the next.

What About Class 11 Students?

A Class 11 student is not eligible for CLAT 2027. The rule covers students writing their qualifying exam in March or April 2027, and a student now in Class 11 will write boards in 2028. Your first eligible attempt is CLAT 2028, which will be held in December 2027 if the Consortium keeps its usual calendar. Class 11 is still a sensible time to start preparing, since the reading and reasoning skills CLAT tests take months to build.

CLAT Age Limit 2027

There is no upper age limit for CLAT 2027 UG. You can apply at 17, 25 or 50, as long as you meet the 10+2 qualification and minimum marks.

Whether you search the age limit of CLAT, the CLAT exam age limit or CLAT age eligibility, the answer for 2027 is the same: there is no upper limit.

Is There a Minimum Age?

The official CLAT 2027 criteria do not set a minimum age. Some websites state a minimum age of 20, which is not in the Consortium's criteria. In practice, the qualification rule acts as the floor, since you must be in or past Class 12 to apply.

Where Age Still Matters: The Tie-Breaker

Age does not decide whether you can sit CLAT, but it can decide your rank. When two or more candidates score the same marks, the Consortium breaks the tie in this order, according to its official instructions:

  1. Higher marks in the Legal Aptitude section

  2. Higher age

  3. A computerised draw of lots

So if you and another candidate tie on total and legal marks, the older candidate ranks higher. With thousands of candidates packed within a few marks of each other, this rule does change ranks, which is one more reason to take the Legal Reasoning section seriously.

Graduates, Working Professionals and Gap-Year Students

With no upper age limit, CLAT UG is open to anyone with a 10+2 pass and the minimum marks, whether you finished school last year or a decade ago. Graduates can sit CLAT UG for a five-year LL.B., although many prefer a three-year LL.B. through other routes once they hold a degree.

Gap years do not appear anywhere in the official criteria, so a gap after Class 12 does not affect eligibility. Keep a simple record of what you did during the gap in case your allotted NLU asks for an explanation at admission.

Who Can and Cannot Appear: Nationality Rules

The Consortium lists four groups who can appear for CLAT 2027 UG: Indian nationals, NRIs, PIO card holders and OCI card holders.

Foreign nationals cannot appear for CLAT. The official CLAT 2027 UG instructions say so directly. Foreign nationals who want to study at an NLU must approach the individual university for admission, using its own process.

NRI and NRI-sponsored seats work differently too. The Consortium does not allot these seats. Candidates seeking them must check each NLU's e-brochure and website and approach the NLU directly. So an NRI student can sit CLAT, but the route to an NRI-quota seat runs through the university, not through CLAT counselling.

CLAT Eligibility Errors You Will See Online

The CLAT eligibility pages that rank on Google often contradict each other. These are the errors that come up most, checked against the Consortium's official text:

What you may read

What the official CLAT 2027 criteria say

Foreign nationals with a valid passport can apply

Foreign nationals are not eligible for CLAT and must approach NLUs directly

The minimum age for CLAT is 20

No minimum age is set in the criteria

PwD candidates need 45%

PwD candidates need 40%, the same as SC and ST

You need a specific stream, often Arts or Commerce

No stream or subject is required

Class 12 students must wait until they pass

Students writing the qualifying exam in March/April 2027 can apply now

The fix is simple. When two sources disagree, open the official CLAT 2027 UG eligibility page on the Consortium website. It is short, and it is the only version that counts at admission.

Approximate weight

English Language

About 20%

Current Affairs, including General Knowledge

About 25%

Legal Reasoning

About 25%

Logical Reasoning

About 20%

Quantitative Techniques

About 10%

Two things about this pattern matter for students coming straight from Class 12. First, CLAT UG does not test prior legal knowledge. Legal Reasoning passages give you the principle you need and test whether you can apply it. Second, because every section is passage-based, reading speed and comprehension run through the whole paper. Students who read widely during Class 11 and 12 start with a real advantage.

Legal Reasoning and Current Affairs together make up about half the paper, and Legal Reasoning is also the first tie-breaker. If you have to prioritise, start there. For question counts and scoring in more detail, see the full CLAT exam pattern.

Documents and Fees When You Apply

You apply online at consortiumofnlus.ac.in. You register with your own mobile number and email ID, verify the number by OTP, then log in to complete the form.

What You Upload

  1. A recent front-facing passport-size photograph with a plain background

  2. Your signature

  3. A category certificate, if applying under SC, ST or OBC

  4. A certificate from the competent authority, if applying under PwD

  5. A certificate from the competent authority, if applying under BPL

All uploads must be PDFs. The photo and signature do not need attestation. Class 12 appearing students do not upload a marksheet at this stage, because proof of passing comes at admission.

Application Fee

Category

CLAT 2027 fee

General, OBC

₹4,000

SC, ST, BPL, PwD

₹3,500

Previous years' question papers (optional)

₹500 extra

Fees are paid online only and are non-refundable. You also bear the bank transaction charges.

Mistakes That Can Cost You the Seat

The form locks some fields once you submit and pay. You cannot change your programme (UG or PG), your category, or your BPL status afterwards. Spell your name and your parents' names exactly as they appear on your certificates and marksheets, because a mismatch can disqualify you. If you submit more than one form, only the last one counts, and the earlier fee is not refunded.

What to Do Next

If you are in Class 12 and eligible, here is the order of work:

  1. Apply before 31 October 2026. Applying early leaves time to check every field before you pay, since your programme, category and BPL status lock once the form is submitted and paid.

  2. Pick your category carefully and make sure your certificate is valid and in the right format before you submit.

  3. Plan preparation around two exams. CLAT comes on 6 December and your boards come in March or April. Keep your board aggregate comfortably above the minimum.

  4. Read the Consortium's information brochure for intake, reservation and fee details for the NLUs you want. These vary by university.

  5. Keep your documents ready for admission: Class 10 and 12 marksheets, your category certificate, and your board's grade conversion notice if relevant.

Preparing for CLAT 2027 alongside your boards? Eligibility is the easy part. The real work is building reading speed, legal reasoning and current affairs before 6 December. Explore our CLAT coaching in Delhi for structured, section-by-section preparation.

CLAT eligibility after 12th is deliberately generous: 45% (or 40%), any stream, any age, and you can apply before your boards. The rule is easy to meet. The work is in the exam.

Frequently Asked Questions
