To use CLAT test papers well, treat each one as a full exam: solve it in one timed two-hour sitting, then spend an equal block analysing every wrong and guessed answer in an error log, and reattempt the paper about two weeks later. Law Prep Tutorial Delhi NCR calls this the three-pass method.
Most aspirants download a stack of CLAT papers and start solving. The score goes up and down, the exam gets closer, and the papers never quite turn into rank. The papers are not the problem. The method is. This guide gives you the exact way Law Prep Tutorial Delhi NCR mentors put CLAT test papers to work, from the first timed attempt to the analysis that actually moves your score.

What are CLAT test papers, and which ones actually matter?
CLAT test papers come in three kinds, and they are not interchangeable. Previous year question papers (PYQs) are the real papers the Consortium of National Law Universities set in past exams. Sample or model papers are practice sets written to resemble the exam. Mock tests are fresh, full-length papers built for repeated timed practice. For pattern accuracy nothing beats a PYQ, because it carries the exact reading load and reasoning depth the exam actually used.
For CLAT 2027 the papers that matter most are 2020 to 2026. The paper changed shape twice: it ran 200 questions from 2008 to 2019, dropped to 150 from 2020 to 2023, and has been a 120-question, two-hour paper since 2024. A 2016 paper trains reading stamina, but only the 2020-onward papers train the comprehension-heavy pattern you will sit. You can study the full breakdown on our CLAT 2027 exam pattern page.
Paper type | What it is | Best used for | When |
Previous year paper (PYQ) | The real Consortium exam from a past year | Learning the true pattern, difficulty and traps | Whole preparation, weighted to 2020-2026 |
Sample or model paper | A practice set built to mimic CLAT | Extra sectional drilling between PYQs | Early and mid phase |
Mock test | A fresh full-length timed paper | Building speed, stamina and exam temperament | Mid to final phase, weekly |
You can download every CLAT paper from 2008 to 2026 with answer keys on the CLAT previous year papers page, linked again at the end of this guide.
When should you start solving CLAT previous year papers?
Start using PYQs the week you finish the basics of a section, not the week before the exam. In the early phase, before your concepts are steady, use PYQs untimed and section by section to see how CLAT actually frames a question. In the mid phase, move to full timed sections. In the final phase, sit complete two-hour papers under exam conditions. One untimed CLAT paper, taken cold at the very start, is also the fastest way to set an honest baseline.
Work backwards from the CLAT 2027 exam date and notification so your final full-length phase finishes just before test day. If you are only now starting out, confirm the CLAT 2027 eligibility before you build the year around paper practice.
Phase | Your focus | How to use papers |
Early | Concepts and reading habit | One untimed PYQ as a baseline, then section-wise, untimed |
Mid | Accuracy and sectional speed | Timed single sections from PYQs and sample papers |
Final | Full-length stamina and strategy | Complete two-hour papers under exam conditions, weekly |
How many CLAT papers should you solve before the exam?
Aim to solve the seven most recent CLAT papers, 2020 to 2026, at least once under timed conditions, and to reattempt your three weakest of them a second time. That is roughly ten full sittings from PYQs alone, before you add mock tests. Solving the latest three first, 2026, 2025 and 2024, keeps your practice closest to the current pattern; then work backwards. Quantity past this point matters far less than how carefully you analyse each paper.
How do you solve a CLAT test paper the right way?
This is Pass 1, the timed attempt. Set a timer for two hours, put your phone in another room, and sit one full paper in a single block. Do not check any answer until the timer stops. CLAT UG gives you 120 questions in 120 minutes, so you have about one minute per question, and the only place to learn that rhythm is under the clock. Mark every answer you guessed with a small dot as you go, because a lucky guess is not a mark you can count on again.
How should you analyse a CLAT paper after solving it?
This is Pass 2, and it is where the score actually moves. Spend as long analysing the paper as you spent solving it. A two-hour paper deserves close to two hours of review. Do not just tally a score. Sort each wrong answer and each dotted guess into one of four buckets:
Knowledge gap: you did not know the concept.
Reading miss: you misread the passage or the question.
Blind guess: you had no basis and got lucky or unlucky.
Time-out: you rushed or ran out of clock.
Keep a running error log across papers, because the pattern in it tells you what to fix. A log full of reading misses is a comprehension problem, not a syllabus problem, and no amount of new material will fix it. A log full of time-outs is a pacing problem you solve with section order, not more content.
Because CLAT deducts 0.25 for a wrong answer and gives nothing for a blank, your blind-guess column is worth real marks. In the 2026 cycle, evaluated out of 119, a single mark could shift an All India Rank by hundreds of places near the cut-off, which is exactly why disciplined guessing pays.

How do you reattempt a paper to lock in the gain?
This is Pass 3, the spaced reattempt. About two weeks after you analyse a paper, sit it again under the timer. Reattempting a CLAT paper checks whether you actually improved or only remembered the answers. Your job on the reattempt is not a higher score by memory, it is fewer entries in each error-log bucket, better timing, and cleaner option elimination. If the same four passages still trip you, the fix has not landed yet.
How do CLAT papers fix your section order and timing?
Use your papers to design the order you attempt sections in. After every paper, note how long you spent on each of the five sections and how many marks it returned. Legal Reasoning and Current Affairs with GK carry the most questions, English and Logical Reasoning sit in the middle, and Quantitative Techniques is the smallest section. Many aspirants lose marks by starting with their slowest section and running out of time for easy marks elsewhere. Papers show you your real per-section rate, so you can lead with the sections that pay best for you and protect the easy marks.
Should you use PYQs or mock tests, and how do they work together?
Use both, for different jobs. PYQs show you the real past pattern and the genuine standard the Consortium expects. Mock tests give you a fresh, unfamiliar paper every week so you practise thinking on exam day rather than recalling. A balanced final phase runs one PYQ and one full mock each week, each followed by the same analysis pass. PYQs teach you what CLAT is; mocks teach you to perform it under pressure.
What are the most common mistakes when using CLAT test papers?
The biggest mistake is solving without analysing, which turns a diagnostic tool into busywork. The second is treating an old paper like a current one, so a 2016 pattern trains you for an exam that no longer exists. The third is checking answers question by question while solving, which destroys the timed pressure that makes a paper useful. This page is not for you if you have not yet built the reading base, because papers diagnose readiness rather than build it from zero. Fix concepts first, and if you want that base built for you, our CLAT coaching in Delhi NCR does exactly that, then let the papers sharpen what you have learned.
A CLAT test-paper plan for the final twelve weeks
Here is the cadence our mentors use once concepts are in place.
Weeks out | Papers per week | Emphasis |
12 to 9 | 1 PYQ (timed sections) | Sectional speed and the error log |
8 to 5 | 1 PYQ plus 1 mock (full length) | Full-length stamina, section order |
4 to 2 | 2 full papers, mixed PYQ and mock | Reattempts of weak papers, timing |
Final week | 1 light full paper, then rest | Review the error log, no new material |
