CLAT Previous Year Question Papers (PYQs): 2008–2026 PDFs, Answer Keys & Section-Wise Analysis

CLAT previous year question papers are the actual question papers set by the Consortium of NLUs for past Common Law Admission Test exams. Law Prep Tutorial's Delhi NCR team publishes every CLAT paper from 2008 to 2026 as free PDFs with answer keys, alongside a section-wise breakdown of how the paper has evolved from 200 questions (2008–2019) to 150 (2020–2023) to the current 120-question, two-hour format. Solving them is the single most reliable way to learn the real difficulty, passage length and section weightage you will face in CLAT 2027.

CLAT Question Papers Year-Wise (2008–2026 PDF)

Practising authentic CLAT question papers does more than any mock. Because the Consortium of National Law Universities writes these papers, they carry the exact reading load, reasoning depth and trap patterns that fresh mock tests can only approximate. On this page you can download the full set of CLAT previous year papers with answers, read a year-by-year trend analysis, and follow the same PYQ practice sequence our mentors use with the students behind 1310+ NLU selections since 2009.

Download CLAT Question Papers Year-Wise (2008–2026 PDF)

Every CLAT question paper PDF below opens the official paper with its answer key. Start with the most recent CLAT previous year papers — 2026, 2025 and 2024 — because they match the current comprehension-heavy pattern most closely, then work backwards to build speed and pattern awareness. Used under a timer, these CLAT test papers are the most authentic mock tests you can sit.

All PDFs open from our master CLAT PYQ download hub (2008–2026) — one page, every year, with answer keys.

Tip: use Ctrl+F / Cmd+F and type a year to jump straight to that CLAT paper on the hub. Older CLAT question paper 2017 and 2016 papers follow the legacy 200-question format and are best used for reading stamina rather than pattern practice.

How the CLAT Question Paper Has Changed: Section-Wise Breakdown

The biggest mistake aspirants make is treating a 2016 paper like a 2026 one. CLAT has been rebuilt twice. Understanding the CLAT exam pattern behind each era tells you which CLAT previous year questions are still worth your time.

  • 2008–2019 (Legacy, ~200 questions): short, fact-based questions, a separate Legal Aptitude section and a Maths section. Useful for GK breadth, weak for today's passage-based reasoning.

  • 2020–2023 (Transitional, 150 questions): the shift to comprehension. Legal Aptitude became Legal Reasoning, and every section moved to passage-based questions.

  • 2024–2026 (Current, 120 questions, 2 hours): fewer questions but denser passages, with negative marking of −0.25 per wrong answer. This is the format for CLAT 2027.

Current-pattern section weightage (CLAT 2024–2026)

Here is the exact CLAT question paper section split for the last three papers — the numbers that actually decide where you should spend preparation hours:

What this tells you: Legal Reasoning and Current Affairs & GK together make up nearly half the paper (about 48–50 marks). If your PYQ practice is not disproportionately weighted toward these two sections, you are optimising the wrong 12-mark Quant tail. This weightage is why our Delhi NCR batches front-load Legal and GK.

CLAT Previous Year Paper: Trend & Difficulty Analysis

Reading CLAT exam questions year by year reveals the direction of travel: longer passages, more inference, less recall. Use this to decide the order in which you solve papers.

Year

Total Qs

Reported Difficulty

What this paper trains

2026

120

Moderate

Balanced, inference-led reading across all five sections.

2025

120

Easy–Moderate

Straightforward Legal & English; good confidence-builder first paper.

2024

120

Moderate

Current-affairs comprehension; the truest CLAT 2027 rehearsal.

2023

150

Moderate

Reading-heavy; last of the 150-question papers.

2022

150

Moderate–Hard

Long Legal & Logical passages; best stamina test.

2021

150

Moderate

Analytical reasoning and reading speed emphasis.

2020

150

Moderate

First comprehension-format paper — the pattern pivot.

For a CLAT 2027 aspirant, the honest verdict: solve 2020–2026 in full, and mine 2016–2019 only for extra GK and vocabulary. Difficulty labels are directional — your own timed score on each CLAT model paper matters far more than a public difficulty rating.

CLAT Question Papers With Answer Keys & Solutions

Every paper in the table above is a CLAT question paper with answers. The Consortium releases a provisional answer key after each exam, then a final key once objections are resolved — so for recent years you will find both the official answer key and detailed solutions. A raw score means little; the learning is in the review.

  • Always attempt the paper as a full CLAT test paper first — without the answer key and under a two-hour timer — then score it against the official key and log every wrong answer by section and by reason (knowledge gap, misread passage, or time pressure).

  • Re-attempt only the questions you got wrong after a gap of a few days — this is where accuracy on CLAT previous year questions with answers actually improves.

  • Track your section-wise accuracy across three papers before changing your strategy; one paper is noise.

CLAT Sample Papers, Model Papers & Subject-Wise Practice

Once you have exhausted the real papers, CLAT sample papers and CLAT model question papers keep the practice going in the current pattern. The Consortium also publishes an official CLAT sample paper each cycle — the CLAT 2026 sample paper by the Consortium is the closest non-exam approximation of the real thing.

Beyond full papers, sharpen individual sections with subject-wise sample papers — English, Current Affairs & GK, Legal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning and Quantitative Techniques. These pair naturally with CLAT mock tests for full-length, timed practice.

Why Solve CLAT Previous Year Question Papers?

Six reasons that actually move a rank, in priority order:

  • Pattern clarity: you internalise the current 120-question, passage-based structure instead of guessing it.

  • Section weightage: PYQs show you where the marks live — Legal Reasoning and GK — so you allocate hours correctly.

  • Time control: the two-hour clock is unforgiving; PYQs reveal exactly which passages you overspend on.

  • Recurring themes: legal principles and GK topics repeat in style year to year, which rewards pattern-aware revision.

  • Accuracy under pressure: with −0.25 negative marking, PYQ practice teaches disciplined guessing.

  • A true readiness benchmark: your timed score on a real CLAT paper is the most honest predictor you have.

How to Use CLAT Previous Year Papers: A Topper-Tested 3-Phase Plan

Downloading papers is easy; sequencing them is where ranks are won. This is the phased plan our Delhi NCR mentors run with students — the same approach behind our recent CLAT 2026 selections.

Phase 1 — Baseline (start of prep)

Solve one recent paper (2024 or 2025) untimed, purely to feel the format and find your weakest section. Do not chase a score yet — this is a diagnostic, not a test.

Phase 2 — Section building (mid prep)

Stop solving full papers. Pull questions section-wise from 2020–2026 and drill one section at a time until Legal Reasoning and GK accuracy crosses your target. This is where most of your PYQ mileage should be spent.

Phase 3 — Full-length simulation (final 8–10 weeks)

Now solve complete papers under strict two-hour conditions, phone off, one paper every few days, newest first. After each, run the wrong-answer log from the section above. Close with the last year CLAT paper as your final dress rehearsal.

How many years should you solve? For a serious NLU target, solve 2020–2026 in full (the current and transitional patterns) and use 2016–2019 selectively for GK and vocabulary. That is roughly seven full-pattern papers done properly — far more valuable than skimming nineteen.

CLAT PG Previous Year Papers

Preparing for the postgraduate exam instead? CLAT PG follows the same two-hour length but tests Constitutional Law and core law subjects, not the five UG sections — so its papers live on a separate page. See CLAT PG previous year question papers for that set. This page covers CLAT UG only.

Frequently Asked Questions

CLAT UG (2024–2026) asks 120 passage-based multiple-choice questions across five sections: English Language, Current Affairs & General Knowledge, Legal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning and Quantitative Techniques. Every section is comprehension-driven — you reason from a passage rather than recall a fact.
